The laptop lifestyle was massively popularized by Tim Ferriss when he released his book titled ‘The 4 Hour Work Week’. I was personally sold on this book purely because of the name. (Who wouldn’t be, right?)

With the traditional way of working from Monday-Friday on a 9–5 schedule sounding way less appealing for many, the laptop lifestyle has become extremely attractive.

What Is The Laptop Lifestyle?

Basically, working from your computer with time and location freedom. You may be thinking palm trees, a hammock, and drinking from a coconut, which it can be… However, there are many variants of what you can be doing, where you’re doing it, how much of it is passive or not, and whether it’s a side gig or a full-time career.

But the overall idea is that you aren’t stuck behind a desk all day working under strict limitations. You may even be able to work the laptop lifestyle for an employer to some degree. However, Intra Lifestyle is about helping you to create your own freedom, whatever that looks like for you personally.

That’s for you to decide.

Who Is The Laptop Lifestyle For?

Believe it or not, but not everyone is cut out to live the laptop lifestyle. You’ll have to know yourself well enough to figure this one out. Here are 2 contrasting possibilities below.

Do you:

  • Enjoy (or will settle for) a regular scheduled and paid job that provides you with set working hours, vacation time, and certain health benefits, but limits your income capabilities and freedom?

Or:

  • Are you okay with putting in a lot of unpaid hours and unpredictable income patterns, for the possibility of unlimited freedom of time, location, and finances in the long term?

It’s worth mentioning that there really is no right or wrong answer here because we all have our own values and goals in life. What is right for you is just fine. However, if you’re reading this then the chances are you selected option B.

I spent way too many hours through college and University working sh**ty jobs that were unfulfilling, poorly paid, and tiring. Fortunately, I decided that it wouldn’t be forever. The change begins within yourself and shifting your mindset.

What Opportunities Are There For Me To Live The Laptop Lifestyle?

Whether you want to become a digital nomad or simply work from the comfort of your own home, there are plenty of methods in today’s world that are suited to many lifestyles.

Here, I’ll share some of the most common and successful models for you to get started.

  • Blogging — Creating a blog around your passion where you can share whatever it is you do. It must be something of value.
  • YouTube — YouTube is still a massive platform for reaching a wide audience with video. If you have something that you’re able to offer a niche of people and help them, then it’s a great opportunity.
  • Podcasting — You can set up a free account on somewhere like Soundcloud. There are many different podcasting platforms, depending on what you are looking to do and how serious you want to take it.
  • Coaching or consulting — Do you have any skills that enable you to work with clients in a particular niche? Some examples could be life coaching, nutrition coaching, personal training, business consulting, dating coach.

(I personally work as an online life coach. If you’re looking to take your life to the next level then you can apply for your free strategy coaching call.)

  • Amazon physical products — Thousands of people from all around the world are selling physical products on Amazon. In fact, there is a high chance that the last item you purchased on Amazon wasn’t actually an Amazon official product. You can learn more about that here: https://sellercentral.amazon.com/
  • Amazon publisher — It’s very easy to set up a free Amazon publishing account and start a business as a publisher. You don’t need a lot of knowledge on it, and you don’t need to write books yourself.
  • Online freelancer — If you have a skill that can be used as a freelancer, such as writing, graphic design, web design, social media, video editor. There are so many niches and specialties where people are looking for someone with your skills. I would check out Upwork. You can use the site to create jobs and people will apply for them, or you can also apply for jobs yourself. I have personally hired writers and designers from there in the past with no issues. You can also look at samples of peoples work if you’re wanting to hire someone.
  • Social media manager/marketer — Many businesses are great at what they do but lack when it comes to social media stuff. If you’re great with the different platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, then you may be able to start a project helping businesses get more followers and leads.
  • Affiliate marketing — Affiliate marketing is a great way to make some extra money for simply sharing products or services by telling people about them. For example, let’s say that you signed up for a new fitness class and you had an amazing time. You naturally told your friends about it and some of them probably joined. If that gym had an affiliate scheme, every time you referred someone to them, the gym would pay you a commission for that. You can also do this on Amazon for free. Check out Amazon Associates for more information on this.

Hopefully, you can now see that there are plenty of opportunities out there to live the desirable laptop lifestyle.

Once you discover what is important to you, you’ll be able to craft a life that is of true meaning and fulfilment, on a laptop or no laptop.

I’d love to hear your thoughts below. What are you currently doing? Which area of online work appeals most to you?
